Moving 202: An Experts Guide to MovingBy Kris Beldin Okay, so in reality there are no moving 'experts'; the only 'experts' are the people who have learned to stay put and not move. This article will add to all those 'moving 101' guides on the Internet. Of course you know the basics, plan, pack, move, unpack -- and, oh yeah, take two Ibuprofen. The headaches dont stop when the boxes are packed. Really, the moving experience has just begun; here are a few other items to put on your to-do list after you put the last box in the moving truck.
Utilities: Whether you are moving into a house or an apartment, if you probably want to shower and stay warm or cool (depending on the season); be sure and contact the utility companies and arrange to have the power, gas, water, phone, cable and so on turned on before you arrive.
Mailing address: If you want the post office to forward your mail to your new address, you will need to fill out and submit change of address forms before you leave. Once you have submitted your change of address information, it can take between seven and 10 days for the change to take effect. This process can be done by picking up a change of address form at the post office or online at USPS.com.
School: This item only applies if you have school-age children. If the school issue wasnt part of your initial moving criteria, you will need to find out where your kids will go to school, find out if there is a bus system and the particulars about using the bus. Typically, this information can be found on many Web sites that offer moving resources.
Subscriptions, Bills & Banks: Even though you have submitted a change of address through the post office, your mail will not find its way to you forever. The change of address process through the post office is merely a temporary fix, this tells the post office where to forward your mail; you will either need to contact the sender yourself or in some cases the sender provides a change of address card for you, which you will need to fill out and return to make the change official.
Vehicle Registration: If you are moving to another state, be sure to find out what the states requirements are for vehicle registration. Registration questions can be answered by contacting the state Department of Motor Vehicles; all have Web sites.
Voter Registration Update: If you are moving within the vicinity of your polling precinct, you wont need to change your registration information. However, if you are changing states or counties you will need to register to vote in that state or county. A quick search of the Internet for registration in (insert state or county here) will yield information on the registration process.
In the end, a successful move is the one that causes you the least amount of headaches. Although you may not be able to completely eliminate headaches, planning ahead and taking care of the little details will sure make the move less stressful and bring you one step closer to becoming an expert.
